2010 India project

More than 160,000 people live in the Indian city of Puri, located in the federal state of Orissa on the Bay of Bengal. It is the city of the Hindu Temple Jagannath, which makes Puri one of this religion's holiest cities and also a favorite destination for Indians. A major part of the population in Puri does not have access to any basic sanitary infrastructure. Geberit wants to change that by getting involved and offering structural help.

Current situation

Children ages 5 to 14 attend the Pentakatha School in Puri, founded by Swiss organization the Usthi Foundation. The children live in the nearby fishing village of Pentakatha, a clutter of over 5,000 bamboo huts. The Swiss organization provided the Pentakatha School with a fresh-water well in 1992, and after 18 years, toilets which need to be refurbished.

Planned activities

In cooperation with a local construction company and the Usthi Foundation, Geberit will build a new sanitary facility with toilets, wash basins and showers for girls and boys. A solar system will power water heating and simple methods will be used to treat waste water.
