2011 Serbia project

On the night of November 3, 2010, a severe earthquake damaged large sections of the city of Kraljevo. Kraljevo is in the center of Serbia and is home to about 100,000 residents. The earthquake affected many schools. Some of the school buildings had to be closed.

Current situation

Available space and the conditions of the school system infrastructure in Kraljevo were already critical before the earthquake due to an influx of refugees into the region in the 1990s during the war in Yugoslavia. The earthquake only aggravated the situation, and today there is a great need for action. Many schools must now tackle the renovation of their buildings, including the two elementary schools, School IV kraljevacki bataljon and Svetozar Markovic, with a combined student body of 2,000 and 120 teachers.

The toilet facilities were also impacted by the earthquake and are in very bad condition. Some of them can no longer be used.

Planned activities

The seven sanitary facilities in both schools are to be completely renovated. Geberit is planning and carrying out the renovation and providing new fittings in the form of 20 WCs, 11 urinals and 18 washbasins. The facilities are to be state of the art in terms of hygiene and water conservation.

The project was submitted by Geberit Belgrade (RS). Together with local authorities and a planning partner, colleagues in Serbia are moving the project forward. In addition, Geberit employees from Switzerland and Germany are providing technical support for the project.

At the end of June a Geberit Team of eleven persons (nine apprentices, a chaperone and a technical advisor) will be on location for two weeks to carry out the planned renovation work. The work must be completed during the summer holidays so as not to interfere with the school year.
